UNIT 3 & 4

WEEK 1 & 2:

6th – 10th Janurary

After the christmas break the first brief was set up for us! Where we had a week to create 5 6×6 pieces a day that represented the news and different articles that day. This gave us the opportunity to understand and acknowledge real life things that surround us on a daily basis. As a person who doesn’t read the news i focused more up on light hearted news and articles. However as politics was one of the main looked up on news i did some work based up on that.

I believe this was very difficult as i found that the new did not differ that much and i seem to not have enough time to do 5 piece a day however, i believe i did very well.

Week 3 & 4:

13th – 24th Janurary

For the next two weeks in our groups we will be focusing on our pontio work. This is a live brief where i got put in to a group that focused up on the 10 metre truss. Our aim was to create a very bright and colourful 3 piece that was made out of fabric and paint.

Week 5 & 6:

3rd – 14th February

Through out this week i have been woking up on a new brief which was called ‘dreams’. For this brief i firstly thought of many different kind of dreams weather they are; good, bad, day dreams, future dreams or even things i just believe in. Therefore i decided to make a piece of work that represented something more than dreams that a typical person would dream about. Instead of focusing on holidays, dream home and going on holiday i focused on more of a reality which is family and self love.

Having my own family is a dream to me where i am able to build a happy foundation as i did not have growing up. Also self love is something i constantly think about where i think of ways to improve my mental health on a daily basis. To follow this i though that these are very deep and vulnerable thoughts that everyone have therefore, i decided to make figures of naked women to represent these thoughts and dreams.

Week 7 & 8:

24th February – 6th March

The last brief that we have got until the final assessment and exhibition is to read and research up on poems by John Cooper Clarke and Benjamin Zephaniah who are both writers. By looking and analysing the poems that were given to me i imminently liked ‘The British’ and ‘City rive blue’ which are both by Benjamin Zephaniah.

As a result from reading both of these poems i instantly though of Birmingham, factories, the law, equality, gangs, violence and many other factors in which that are mentioned in both poems. As i read through the poems and thought of all of these factors i wanted to associate it with different colours. The colours that i chose are; blue, red, purple and green where i used these colours in pencil in to sketch out my thoughts.

The British

“ Take some Picts, Celts and Silures
And let them settle,
Then overrun them with Roman conquerors.
Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years
Add lots of Norman French to some
Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously.

Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans,
Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese,
Vietnamese and Sudanese.
Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians
And Pakistanis,
Combine with some Guyanese
And turn up the heat.
Sprinkle some fresh Indians, Malaysians, Bosnians,
Iraqis and Bangladeshis together with some
Afghans, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish, Japanese
And Palestinians
Then add to the melting pot.
Leave the ingredients to simmer.
As they mix and blend allow their languages to flourish
Binding them together with English.
Allow time to be cool.
Add some unity, understanding, and respect for the future,
Serve with justice
And enjoy.
Note: All the ingredients are equally important. Treating one ingredient better than another will leave a bitter unpleasant taste.

Warning: An unequal spread of justice will damage the people and cause pain. Give justice and equality to all.”
