Diagnostic Blocks

This section of the blog will show you the work that i have been up to during the diagnostic block. This is where i have been experimenting in all different ways an artist can in order to determine my strengths and weaknesses. This will then allow me to develop my strengths even further when deciding on what subject to specialise in at the end of the 9 weeks.

All of the images of the work will be seen on the “portfolio” section which is found on the top and the bottom of the home page.

Hope you enjoy!

WEEK 1:

9th – 13th September

The first week was very interesting and very new to me as i did not expect the amount of commitment, work and understanding i had to have in order to focus on my work.

Monday: The week started on a Monday where we as a group of foundation students where hit by insecurities of some sort. We had to create a large self portrait of our selves using a range of mediums. I had never done a piece as big as seen in the photos but i did enjoy it very much; as i never knew i could have done something of sort.

Tuesday: The second day was very interesting as i had to understand the concept of light and space for the first time. At first i was uncertain as i had not dealt with it before however, i think i got the hang of it!

The task was to prop up a mirror and draw everything i could see in front of me; which also included the picture i was drawing. I did struggle a lot getting the proportions correctly therefore, i left today very anxious and uncertain as how i would be able to finish the black and white multimedia piece of art work.

Thursday: Today was a very fun day! I had the opportunity to create sculptures out of clay. For me this was a very relaxing activity which made me think that is was more about playing games and fun rather than making a piece of art. As a result i do not think that making sculptures out of clay was very appropriate for me as i also had nails that were just too long!!

Friday: This was the first time every i had done any kind of life drawing which was very interesting. Again, we had the opportunity to understand space and light with in the area and the structure of the human body. At first i did not get the proportion right which made the experience very stressful.

WEEK 2:

16th – 20th September

Monday: This was a very fast pace and stressful day at the studios as; we had to make sure that the majority of our mix media self portrait made in to a whole piece of art. As the piece is so big it can be very difficult to join it and make it to fit together.

At this point in time i did not like the overall look as i would compare to others however; i stuck to it and carried on until i was fully satisfied. Im just mostly relieved that we have another Monday to finish it!!

Tuesday: Last Tuesday i very underwhelming and quite disappointed with my work as i hadn’t done much. However, this day i had done much more than i expected i had filled the page with all of the black and white mix-media you could think of which included; black ink, chalk, pencil and biro. Im so pleased with it but still have another Tuesday on it. Yeyy!!

Thursday: Today wasn’t a very good day for me where; i did not enjoy it at all!! Todays challenge was getting to understand paper and use it in order to make shapes and sculptures. As a result i found that it was very difficult and too stressful to understand and get the paper to do what i wanted it to do. Therefore i do not like making sculptures out of paper.

Friday: Fridays i feel are the most daunting and stressful days as the life room is very serious and dark which, creates a very tense atmosphere which is not what i like when creating a piece of art work!

Today we carried on getting to know the body and how to use our eyes to our advantage where we would measure accurately the model and her surrounding to get the best art piece. At this point i was just too tired and stressed that i didn’t even think if i liked the outcome of the day or not!

WEEK 3:

23rd – 27th September

Monday: Today i was very relieved to be resolving my massive self portrait! As a result and reflecting over the last few weeks i have enjoyed very much working on large scale however; i still feel a bit unmotivated at drawing faves as i believe it is quite difficult. On the other hand i do feel very pleased with the outcome of today and I’m looking forward to be starting to think about my childhood for the next piece.

Tuesday: This was the day that i finally resolved my black and white mix media self portrait. By reflecting up on my work i think it look very good, to say that i have never done such thing before.

I am pleased to say that i feel much more confident with using black and white mediums and, i will definitely be using it in my future work!!

Thursday: This Thursday was even more different than the previous where; we had to heat up some aluminium and create shapes using fabrics in to the metal by; putting it through the roller.

As a result I thought this was very interesting and fun where i wanted to know more about the process and research more artists that did similar art pieces.

Friday: This Friday session in the life room is the last where we did something a little different this time which was done on a very fast pace. Today i had to walk around the model and quickly sketch her from different angles which then; lead me to paint a different angle of her face previous to what i had done prior!

After resolving the very quick painting of the back of the models head, i then stuck both of the art pieces and somehow joined them together in order to create one piece of art. I found this quite stressful at the start as i did not know what i should or shouldn’t be doing however, i think i found a very good way to resolve this piece once and for all as its the last day in the life room!

WEEK 4:

30th – 4th October

Monday: This is a new and fresh start to my Monday’s where; we had a challenge to create a lifetime story board of our selves by using mix media on a large scale. At first i had no idea what to put on the daunting blank white paper so i started with drawing my face in present day as; reversing in the past would be easier.

As a result of today i feel that i did not have a single clue what i was doing but, it felt right and it felt ok to feel that way!!

Thursday: This is the last day where i will be working in the workshop where; i have been working with metals such as copper and making shapes and forms in to it. I really did enjoy making shapes and forms with the copper as it was very interesting however, i did feel that it wasn’t something i would like to specialise in because: i much rather draw than use machinery.

Friday: This firday was the first day of printing. We started with scratching a picture or a pattern on to a piece of metal, coated it with some ink and printed it using the print machine where it would have been pressed effectively and transported on to some paper.

At first it did not go too well as i didn’t press enough however, after a few tries i really enjoyed it and was more successful.

WEEK 5:

7th – 11th October

Monday: This Monday was similar to last Monday where we just resolved the story board and added a few more boxes. In my opinion i did not really like this as i would have rather picked another story however; i thought it was very relevant to the time of year which was halloween.

Tuesday: This was the first day of the video making. Firstly i had to go out and get some video footage from out side of the collage as; i missed last week. Then after getting the footage i started to edit it in to a video where i would add movement and sound effects in the background. So far i think this was very fun and i was surprised how i had caught up and edited it very effectively.

Thursday: Sculpturing is not what i thought i would enjoy very much as it is messy and that i haven’t done it before. I stated with filling my design with some mould that i had made perviously and let that set through out the day. At first i thought it would work out well however, i had miss placed it and it wasn’t a success. Therefore, i just carried on and sanded it down to get my desired shape while trying to get the objects out of it.

Friday: This is the second day of printing. Today we had make prints by with the rubber that we had carved in to. As this was my first time I thought it was a little complicated and difficult to get the print that i wanted however, by the end of the day i really enjoyed the outcome of the print.

at the end of the day i also practiced to make prints using more than one colour which completely transformed my prints to make them different and stand out even more. Therefore, i am very pleased with the outcome.

WEEK 6:

14th – 18th October

Monday: Today was one of the most relaxing Mondays yet!! The brief was to create a story board about the journey and transformation of an object where; we had to use mixed media.

As a result i really enjoy the change of creating a big piece of art to creating, a very small and delicate mix media piece of work. Im looking forward for resolving and expanding the story board next week.

Tuesday: Today was a very similar day to last week where, we just carried on and finished our short day in the life vlog.

I made a few changes such as making each scene flow to one another and, adding background music to the video by screen recording from a non copyright account on youtube. Overall i have really enjoyed this.

Thursday: This day was very fun where i got to make a sculpture with pieces of plastic and stick that related from the plaster sculpture i did last week.

As a result i thought it went very well. To add i also made a quick drawing out of ink of both of the sculptures made; where i think i will need to develop further to make it more realistic and 3D.

Friday: Once again the printmaking process went very well. Today we got to do some lino printing which i found very fun and exciting. I decided to go for a flower as for the past 4 weeks i have been focusing on people and portraits.

As i result i think that most of my prints went very well however, the first ones did not come out as well due to not scratching deep enough. Although the first ones didn’t go very well i learnt from my mistakes and got nice results.

WEEK 7:

21st – 22nd October

Monday; This Monday we did not do what we would usually do which is; resolving the work from last week which was the storyboard. Instead we made one mix media piece that tells the whole story.

Here i would include different elements of the story and combine together to make sense of it all in one picture.

WEEK 8:

4th – 8th November

Monday; Today was a very exciting day back at college. We were given a brief which was ‘drawing’ which meant as a result i was able to do what ever i wanted to make which; will make an input to the decision making of deciding what subject i should focus and specialise in. I decided to make a textile format collage which i practiced before the half term which is what is shown below. However, it is not yet done as i have another day to work on it further.

Thursday; Today was another day in the sculpture room where, i started the day off fixing my sculpture as, it had previously broke unexpectedly. Therefore, during the morning i fixed my product and i added another element to it. I didnt want to add much to it as i liked how it looked however, i wanted to try and make something different.

After lunch i eventually sketched the sculpture in two different angles. For the sketch i used a purple colouring pencil where: i tied to accurately draw it.

Tuesday; Tuesday was another fun day where i had textiles again. Today we made some photo transferred on to fabric. I had photo copied my post cards that i had previously done and, put it on to fabric. The way i did this was pug some white acrylic on the photo copy, iron it on to the fabric until it dried and put it in to water.

I found this very fun and would hope to do more in the future. After getting the image transfer out of the water i gently rubbed the image off where it left an amazing and beautiful image on to the fabric. I repeated this about 5 times.

Friday; This Friday was the first photography day where i used the dark room for the first time. the way we did it was that we got a coffee can and photographed an image by tarring the paper off the hole which allowed light to flood in which captured the image. Then we put it in to developing ink to stay to develop. I repeated this process 4 times however, the first time did not work well as i was only left with a black image.

After lunch then we received our images and transfer them on to the computer so we could start editing it. The computer allowed us to transform the photo and invert it to get the best detail out of the image.
